The Introit Psalm 4. Cum invocarem.
HEAR me when I call, O God of my
righteousness: * thou hast set me at liberty when I was in trouble; have mercy
upon me, and hearken unto my prayer.
2 O ye sons of men, how long will ye blaspheme mine honour, * and have such pleasure in vanity, and seek after falsehood?
2 O ye sons of men, how long will ye blaspheme mine honour, * and have such pleasure in vanity, and seek after falsehood?
3
Know this also, that the LORD hath chosen to himself the man that is godly; *
when I call upon the LORD he will hear me.
4 Stand in awe, and sin not; * commune with your own heart, and in your chamber, and be still.
5 Offer the sacrifice of righteousness, * and put your trust in the LORD.
6 There be many that say, * Who will show us any good?
7 LORD, lift thou up* the light of thy countenance upon us.
8 Thou hast put gladness in my heart; * yea, more than when their corn and wine and oil increase.
9 I will lay me down in peace, and take my rest; * for it is thou, LORD, only, that makest me dwell in safety.
4 Stand in awe, and sin not; * commune with your own heart, and in your chamber, and be still.
5 Offer the sacrifice of righteousness, * and put your trust in the LORD.

7 LORD, lift thou up* the light of thy countenance upon us.

The Collect
ALMIGHTY God, the giver of all good
gifts, who of thy divine providence hast appointed divers Orders in thy Church:
Give thy grace, we humbly beseech thee, to all those who are to be called to any
office and administration in the same; and so replenish them with the truth of
thy doctrine, and endue them with innocency of life, that they may faithfully
serve before thee, to the glory of thy great Name, and the benefit of thy holy
Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Epistle, I Corinthians 3:5-11.
WHO then is Paul, and who is Apollos,
but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? I have
planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that
planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
Now he that planteth and he that watereth are equal: and every man shall
receive his own reward according to his own labour. For we are labourers together
with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building. According to the grace
of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the
foundation, and another build- i eth thereon. But let every man take heed how
he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid,
which is Jesus Christ.
The Gospel. St. John 4:31-38.
IN the mean while his disciples prayed
him, saying, Master, eat. But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye
know not of. Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him
ought to eat? Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent
me, and to finish his work. Say not ye, There are yet four ; months, and then
cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you; Lift up your eyes, and look on the
fields; for they are white already to harvest. And he that reapeth receiveth
wages,j and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he
that reapeth may rejoice together. And herein is that saying true, One soweth,
and another reapeth. I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour:
other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.

The
Epistle I Peter 4:7-11.
THE end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore
sober, and watch unto prayer. And above
all things have fervent charity among yourselves:
for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. Use hospitality one to another without
grudging. As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to
another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If any man speak, let
him speak as the oracles of God, if any man minister, let him do it as of the
ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus
Christ to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
The
Gospel. St. Luke 12:25-44.
JESUS said: Which of you by being anxious can add
a cubit to his span of life? If ye then be not able to do that thing which is
least, why are ye anxious for the rest? Consider the lilies how they grow: they
toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory
was not arrayed like one of these. If then God so clothe the grass, which is to
day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he
clothe you, O ye of little faith? And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye
wall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. For all these things do the nations
of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these
things. But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be
added unto you. Fear not, little flock; for it is
your Father's good pleasure to give
you the kingdom. Sell that ye have, and give
alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that
faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. For where your
treasure is, there will your heart be also. Let your loins be girded about, and
your lights burning; and ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord,
when he will return from the wedding; that when
he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him
immediately. Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall
find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them
to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. And if he shall come
in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are
those servants. And this know, that if the
goodman of the house had known what hour the thief
would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken
through. Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when
ye think not. Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us,
or even to all? And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward,
whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion
of meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh
shall find so doing. Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler
over all that he hath.

The
Epistle. I Timothy 1: 12-17.
I THANK Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled
me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; who was
before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because
I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant
with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying, and
worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners;
of whom I am chief. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first
Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which
should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting. Now unto the King eternal,
immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever.
Amen.
The
Gospel. St. Matthew 16:24-27.
THEN said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man
will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life
for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the
whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange tor
his soul? For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his
angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
