The kingdom of heaven is like unto a grain of mustard seed, which is least of all seeds; * but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs.

Holy Communion

The Introit  Psalm 20. Exaudiat te Dominus.

THE LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; * the Name of the God of Jacob defend thee:
2 Send thee help from the sanctuary, * and strengthen thee out of Sion:
3 Remember all thy offerings, * and accept thy burnt-sacrifice:
4 Grant thee thy heart’s desire, * and fulfil all thy mind.
5 We will rejoice in thy salvation, and triumph in the Name of the L
ORD our God: * the LORD perform all thy petitions.
    6 Now know I that the L
ORD helpeth his anointed, and will hear him from his holy heaven, * even with the wholesome strength of his right hand.
7 Some put their trust in chariots, and some in horses; * but we will remember the Name of the L
ORD our God.
8 They are brought down and fallen; * but we are risen and stand upright.
9 Save,LORD; and hear us, O King of heaven, * when we call upon thee.

The Collect.

OGOD, whose blessed Son was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil, and make us the sons of God, and heirs of eternal life; Grant us, we beseech thee, that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves, even as he is pure; that, when he shall appear again with power and great glory, we may be made like unto him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where with thee, O Father, and thee, O Holy Ghost, he liveth and reigneth ever, one God, world without end.Amen.

The Epistle. 1 St. John iii. 1.

BEHOLD, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law; for sin is the transgression of the law. And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whoso-ever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

The Gradual Ps 99:6-8
MOSES and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among such as call upon his Name: / these called upon the Lord, and he heard them.
7 He spake unto them out of the cloudy pillar; / for they kept his testimonies, and the law that he gave them.
8 Thou heardest them, O Lord our God; / thou forgavest them, O God, though thou didst punish their doings.

The Alleluia Ps 99:9

Alleluia! Alleluia! O magnify the Lord our God, and worship at his holy hill; / for the Lord our God is holy.  Alleluia!

The Gospel. St. Matt. xxiv. 23.

THEN if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together. Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: and then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

2nd Evensong
The Psalms Appointed
148, 149 & 150

The Readings
Num 24:2-25 & Luke 10:1-16

The Antiphon for the Magnificat
As the lightening cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west: * so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Wednesday after the Sixth Sunday after Epiphany

Holy Communion

The Epistle  1 Tim. ii. 1-7

Dearly Beloved, I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.

The Gospel  Matt. xxi. 28-32

At that time, Jesus said to the multitude of the Jews, A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard. He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not. Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
