The Introit Psalm
1. Beatus vir qui
non abiit.
BLESSED is the man that hath
not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners, *
and hath not sat in the seat of the scornful.
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; * and in his
law will he exercise himself day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the water-side, *
that will bring forth his fruit in due season.
4 His leaf also shall not wither; * and look, whatsoever he
doeth, it shall prosper.
5 As for the ungodly, it is not so with them; * but they are
like the chaff, which the wind scattereth away from the face of the earth.
6 Therefore the ungodly shall not be able to stand in the
judgment, * neither the sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
7 But the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous; * and the
way of the ungodly shall perish.
The Collect.
ALMIGHTY God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of
darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal
life, in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in
the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both
the quick and [the]* dead, we may rise to the life immortal, through him who
liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, now and ever. Amen.
¶ This Collect is to be repeated every day, with
the other Collects in Advent, until Christmas-day.
The Epistle. Rom. xiii. 8.
OWE no man any thing, but to love one an other: for he that loveth
another hath fulfilled the law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou
shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou
shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly
comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the
law. And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of
sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far
spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and
let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in
rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and
envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the
flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
The Gradual Ps 85:4-6
TURN us, O God our Saviour, * and let thine anger cease from us.
5 Wilt thou be displeased at us for ever? * and wilt thou stretch
out thy wrath from one generation to another?
6 Wilt thou not turn again and quicken us, * that thy people may rejoice in
thee?
The Alleluia Ps 85:7
Alleluia, Alleluia. O Lord, show thy
mercy upon us, * and grant us thy salvation. Alleluia.
The Gospel. St. Matt. xxi. 1.
WHEN they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage,
unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples, saying unto them, Go
into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied,
and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me. And if any man say
ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he
will send them. All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken
by the prophet, saying, Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh
unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. And
the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them, and brought the ass, and
the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon. And. a very
great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from
the trees, and strewed them in the way. And the multitudes that went before,
and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he
that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. And when he was
come into Jerusalem. all the city was moved, saying, Who is this? And the
multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee. And Jesus
went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the
temple, and overthrew the tables of the money-changers, and the seats of them
that sold doves, and said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called
the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.

Epistle James 5:7-10
Be
patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the
husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience
for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. Be
ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. Grudge
not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge
standeth before the door. Take, my brethren, the
prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering
affliction, and of patience.
Gospel Mark 1:1-8
The
beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in
the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare
thy way before thee. The voice of one crying in the
wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. John
did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the
remission of sins. And there went out unto him all the
land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the
river of Jordan, confessing their sins. And John was
clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he
did eat locusts and wild honey; And preached, saying,
There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not
worthy to stoop down and unloose. I indeed have baptized
you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

The Lesson Isa. 60:1-8.
Arise,
shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon
thee. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth,
and gross darkness the people: but theLord shall arise upon thee, and his
glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall
come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising. Lift
up thine eyes round about, and see: all they gather themselves together, they
come to thee: thy sons shall come from far, and thy daughters shall be nursed
at thy side. Then thou shalt see, and flow together, and
thine heart shall fear, and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall
be converted unto thee, the forces of the Gentiles shall come unto thee. The
multitude of camels shall cover thee, the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah; all
they from Sheba shall come: they shall bring gold and incense; and they shall
shew forth the praises of the Lord. All the flocks
of Kedar shall be gathered together unto thee, the rams of Nebaioth shall
minister unto thee: they shall come up with acceptance on mine altar, and I
will glorify the house of my glory. Who are these that
fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their windows?
The Gospel Matt. 3:1-6.
In those
days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, And
saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. For
this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one
crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths
straight. And the same John had his raiment of camel's
hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild
honey. Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea,
and all the region round about Jordan, And were baptized
of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
