Of the BVM in Advent
The Collect
O God, who wast pleased that thy Word should take flesh in the womb of blessed Mary ever-virgin, through the message of an angel, grant unto us thy suppliants,
that as we believe her to be truly the mother of God, so we may be aided by her intercessions before thee. Through Jesus Christ Our Lord who liveth and reigneth with thee and Holy Ghost one God unto the ages of ages. Amen.
The
Lesson. Isaiah vii. 10-15
In those days, the
Lord spake again unto Ahaz, saying, Ask thee a sign of the Lord thy God; ask it
either in the depth, or in the height above. But Ahaz said, I will not ask,
neither will I tempt the Lord. And he said, Hear ye now, O house of David; Is it
a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also? Therefore
the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and
bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Butter and honey shall he eat,
that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.
The
Gospel. Luke i, 26-38
At that time, the
Angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a
virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the
virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou
that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what
manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not,
Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in
thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be
great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give
unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of
Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto
the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered
and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the
Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be
born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth,
she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with
her, who was called barren. For with God nothing shall be impossible. And Mary
said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And
the angel departed from her.

The
Collect
O God, who by the fruitful virginity of blessed Mary hast bestowed upon mankind the reward of eternal salvation ; grant to us ,we beseech thee, to perceive that
she intercedes for us, by whom we have been counted worthy to receive the author of life, our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son. Who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Goast one God unto the ages of ages. Amen.
The
Epistle. Titus iii, 4-7
Beloved, the
kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of
righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by
the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on
us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his
grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life in Christ
Jesus our Lord.
The
Gospel. Luke ii. 15-20
At that time, the
shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this
thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they
came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And
when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them
concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things
which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and
pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising
God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

The
Collect
Grant, we beseech thee, O Lord God, that we thy servants may enjoy continual health of mind and body ; and through the glorious intercession of the blessed ever-
virgin Mary, may be delivered from present sorrow, and may have the fruition of everlasting joy. Through Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son. Who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Goast one God unto the ages of ages. Amen.
The
Lesson. Ecclus. xxiv. 9-12
He created me from
the beginning before the world, and I shall never fail. In the holy tabernacle
I served before him; and so was I established in Sion. Likewise in the beloved
city he gave me rest, and in Jerusalem was my power. And I took root in an
honourable people, even in the portion of the Lord’s inheritance, and my abode
is in the full congregation of the saints.
The
Gospels
Luke
xi. 27, 28
At that time, it
came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted
up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the
paps which thou hast sucked. But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that
hear the word of God, and keep it.
Or
John
xix. 25-27
At that time, there
stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife
of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the
disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold
thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour
that disciple took her unto his own home.
