Our Lady

Our Lady

The Morning and Evening Service to be used to commemorate Our Lady, upon her dormition and at other times at the discretion of the Rector, shall be the same which is appointed in this book with the following alterations.

Matins

Venite, exultemus Domino.

Ant: Hail Mary, full of grace: * Our Lord is with thee.

O COME, let us sing unto the LORD ; let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation.
    Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving : and show ourselves glad in him with psalms.
For the LORD is a great God : and a great King above all gods.
    In his hand are all the corners of the earth : and the strength of the hills is his also.
The sea is his, and he made it; * and his hands prepared the dry land.
O come, let us worship and fall down, * and kneel before the LORD our Maker.
    For he is the Lord our God; * and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.
O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness; * let the whole earth stand in awe of him.
    For he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth; * and with righteousness to judge the world, and the people with his truth.

Then May be sung or said this hymn.

It is truly meet to bless you, O Theotokos, ever-blessed and most pure, and the Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and more glorious beyond compare than the Seraphim, without defilement you gave birth to God the Word. True Theotokos we magnify you!

Psalm 8. Domine, Dominus noster.

Ant: Blessed art thou among women, * and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

O LORD our Governor, how excellent is thy Name in all the world; * thou that hast set thy glory above the heavens!
    2 Out of the mouth of very babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength, because of thine enemies, * that thou ightiest still the enemy and the avenger.
3 When I consider thy heavens, even the work of thy fingers; * the moon and the stars which thou hast ordained;
    4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? * and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
    5 Thou madest him lower than the angels, * to crown him with glory and worship.
    6 Thou makest him to have dominion of the works of thy hands; * and thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet:
    7 All sheep and oxen; * yea, and the beasts of the field;
    8 The fowls of the air, and the fishes of the sea; * and whatsoever walketh through the paths of the seas.
    9 O LORD our Governor, * how excellent is thy Name in all the world!

GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Psalm 19. Caeli enarrant.

Ant: Thou didst remain an inviolate virgin after thy childbearing: * O mother of God pray for us.
THE heavens declare the glory of God; * and the firmament showeth his handy-work.
    2 One day telleth another; * and one night certifieth another.
    3 There is neither speech nor language; * but their voices are heard among them.
    4 Their sound is gone out into all lands; * and their words into the ends of the world.
    5 In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun; * which cometh forth as a bridegroom out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a giant to run his course.
    6 It goeth forth from the uttermost part of the heaven, and runneth about unto the end of it again; * and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.
    7 The law of the L
ORD is an undefiled law, converting the soul; * the testimony of the LORD is sure, and giveth wisdom unto the simple.
    8 The statutes of the L
ORD are right, and rejoice the heart; * the commandment of the LORD is pure, and giveth light unto the eyes.
    9 The fear of the L
ORD is clean, and endureth for ever; * the judgments of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether.
    10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; * sweeter also than honey, and the honeycomb.
    11 Moreover, by them is thy servant taught; * and in keeping of them there is great reward.
    12 Who can tell how I offendeth? * O cleanse thou me from my secret faults.
    13 Keep thy servant also from presumptuous sins, lest they get the dominion over me; * so shall I be undefiled, and innocent from the great offence.
    14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be I acceptable in thy sight, * O L
ORD, my strength and my redeemer.
GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Then shall follow the readings and canticles

Prov. Viii: 22

The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: while as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: when he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: when he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him; rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men. Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways. Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the Lord.

Then shall be said one of the canticles appointed for after the first reading at Matins after which shall be read.

St. Luke I 26

And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

Benedictus. St. Luke i. 68.

Ant: O blessed Mary, Holy Theotokos , temple of our Lord, the sacred place of the holy Ghost: * as the scriptures foretold we ever call thee blessed among women.

BLESSED be the Lord God of Israel; * for he hath visited and redeemed his people;
And hath raised up a mighty salvation for us, * in the house of his servant David;
As he spake by the mouth of his holy Prophets, * which have been since the world began;
That we should be saved from our enemies, * and from the hand of all that hate us.
To perform the mercy promised to our forefathers, * and to remember his holy covenant;
To perform the oath which he sware to our forefather Abraham, * that he would give us;
That we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies * might serve him without fear;
In holiness and righteousness before him, * all the days of our life.

And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: * for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
To give knowledge of salvation unto his people * for the remission of their sins,
Through the tender mercy of our God; * whereby the day-spring from on high hath visited us;
To give light to them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death, * and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Then the shall be prayed “the Lord be with You” etc. and the Lord’s Prayer followed by the Ave Maria as follows.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

It is truly meet to bless you, O Theotokos, ever-blessed and most pure, and the Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and more glorious beyond compare than the Seraphim, without defilement you gave birth to God the Word. True Theotokos we magnify you!

Psalm 110. Dixit Dominus.

Ant: The Angel of the Lord Declared unto Mary * and she conceived by the Holy Ghost.

THE LORD said unto my Lord, * Sit thou on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
    2 The L
ORD shall send the rod of thy power out of Sion: * be thou ruler, even in the midst among thine enemies.
3 In the day of thy power shall thy1 people offer themselves willingly with an holy worship: * thy young men come to thee as dew from the womb of the morning.
    4 The LORD sware, and will not repent, * Thou art a Priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.
    5 The Lord upon thy right hand * shall wound even kings in the day of his wrath.
    6 He shall judge among the heathen; * he shall fill the places with the dead bodies, and smite in sunder the heads over divers countries.
    7 He shall drink of the brook in the way; * therefore shall he lift up his head.

    3 The L
ORD’S Name is praised * from the rising up of the sun unto the going down of the same.
4 The LORD is high above all nations, * and his glory above the heavens.
    5 Who is like unto the LORD our God, that hath his dwelling so high, * and yet humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven and earth!
    6 He taketh up the simple out of the dust, * and lifteth the poor out of the mire;
    7 That he may set him with the princes, * even with the princes of his people.
    8 He maketh the barren woman to keep house, * and to be a joyful mother of children.

GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Psalm 122. Lætatus sum.

Ant: And the Word was made flesh * and dwelt amongst us.

I WAS glad when they said unto me, * We will go into the house of the LORD.
    2 Our feet shall stand in thy gates, * O Jerusalem.
    3 Jerusalem is built as a city * that is at unity in itself.
    4 For thither the tribes go up, even the tribes of the L
ORD, * to testify unto Israel, to give thanks unto the Name of the LORD.
    5 For there is the seat of judgment, * even the seat of the house of David.
    6 O pray for the peace of Jerusalem; * they shall prosper that love thee.
    7 Peace be within thy walls, * and plenteousness within thy palaces.
    8 For my brethren and companions' sakes, * I will wish thee prosperity.
    9 Yea, because of the house of the L
ORD our God, * I will seek to do thee good.

Romans 5:12-21

Therefore as sin came into the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all men sinned—  sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law.  Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.  And the free gift is not like the effect of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brings justification.  If, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Then as one man’s trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one man’s act of righteousness leads to acquittal and life for all men. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by one man’s obedience many will be made righteous.  Law came in, to increase the trespass; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Then shall be said the Magnificat with the Antiphon for Feasts of the BVM after which shall be read.

Luke 11:27-28

As he said this, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that you sucked!”  But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

Then shall be said

Nunc dimittis. St. Luke ii. 29.

Ant: Rejoice thou queen of heaven, alleluia: because whom thou didst bear, alleluia: is risen again as he said, alleluia.

LORD, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, * according to thy word.
For mine eyes have seen * thy salvation,
Which thou hast prepared * before the face of all people;
To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, * and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

Then the shall be prayed “the Lord be with You” etc. and the Lord’s Prayer followed by the Ave Maria as follows.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Then shall be said the rest of the prayers as usual, but one of the collects for one of her feast days may be used is substitution for the collect of the day.
