Of a Deaconess
The
Collect.
O GOD, who hast bestowed upon thy Church divers
gifts and graces of Ministry: We give thee humble thanks for thy servant___ whom
we commemorate this day; and we beseech thee to help us follow in her steps,
and fill our hearts with love of thee, and of others for thy sake; through
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The
Epistle. Romans 15:30-16:2.
NOW I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus
Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me
in your prayers to God for me; that I may be delivered from them that do not
believe in Judaea; and that my service which I have for Jerusalem may be
accepted of the saints; that I may come unto you with joy by the will of God,
and may with you be refreshed. Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen. I
commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a deaconess of the church which is
at Cenchrea: that ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye
assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a
succourer of many, and of myself also.
The
Gospel. St. Matthew 9:35-38.
JESUS went about all the cities and villages,
teaching in their synagogues, and preaching The Gospel of the kingdom, and
healing every sickness and every disease among the people. But when he saw the
multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and
were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Then saith he unto his
disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye
therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his
harvest.
