The following Confession of
Sin may be said; if one has not been said at Evensong or Compline or the Office
may begin at once with “O Lord, open thou our lips.”
Confession of Sin
The Officiant says to the
people
Dearly beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty
God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have
received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his holy
Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary
for our life and our salvation. And so
that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us kneel in
silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may
obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy.
or this
Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.
Silence may be kept.
Officiant and People
together, all kneeling
Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed
from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and
desires of our own hearts, we have offended
against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have
done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou,
O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults, restore
thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in
Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we
may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy
Name. Amen.
The Priest alone stands and
says
The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission
of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and
consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.
A deacon or lay person using
the preceding form remains kneeling, and substitutes “us” for “you” and “our”
for “your.”

[Alleluia.]
On All Saints and other Major Saints’ Days: [Alleluia.] The Lord is glorious in his saints: O come,
let us adore him. [Alleluia.]
The Venite Psalm 95
O come, let us
sing unto the Lord; * let us heartily
rejoice in the strength of our salvation.
Let us come
before his presence with thanksgiving, * and show ourselves glad in him with
psalms.
For the Lord is a
great God, * and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are
all the corners of the earth, * and the strength of the hills is his also.
The sea is his
and he made it, * and his hands prepared the dry land.
O come, let us
worship and fall down * and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For he is the
Lord our God, * and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.
Today if ye will
hear his voice, harden not your hearts * as in the provocation, and as in the
day of temptation in the wilderness;
When your fathers
tempted me, * proved me, and saw my works.
Forty years long
was I grieved with this generation, and said, * It is a people that do err in
their hearts, for they have not known my ways;
Unto whom I sware
in my wrath, * that they should not enter into my rest.
In Easter Week, in place of an Invitatory Psalm, the Pascha nostrum is
sung or said. It may also be used daily until the Day of Pentecost.
Then follows

And let them turn to the Lord, and he will have compassion, * and to our God,
for he will richly pardon.
Advent:
Seek the Lord while he wills to be found; * call upon him when he draws near.

while he is near:
Let the wicked forsake his way,* and the unrighteous man his
thoughts:
and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy
upon him;* and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,* neither are your
ways my ways, saith the LORD.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,* so are my
ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven,* and
returneth not thither, but watereth the earth,
and maketh it bring forth and bud,* that it may give seed to
the sower, and bread to the eater:
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth:* it
shall not return unto me void but it shall accomplish that which I please,* and
it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy
Ghost:
as it was in the
beginning, is now, and ever shall be * world without end. Amen.

LORD is risen upon thee.

light,* and kings to the brightness of thy rising.

cover the earth,* and gross darkness the people
Easter: they shall call thee; The city
of the LORD,* The Zion of the Holy One of Israel. Alleluia!
Arise, shine; for thy light is come,* and the glory of the LORD is
risen upon thee.
For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth,* and gross
darkness the people:
but the LORD shall arise upon thee,* and his glory shall be seen
upon thee.
And the Gentiles shall come to thy light,* and kings to the
brightness of thy rising
Therefore thy gates shall be open continually;* they shall not be
shut day nor night;
and they shall call thee; The city of the LORD,* The Zion of the
Holy One of Israel.
Violence shall no more be heard in thy land,* wasting nor
destruction within thy borders;
but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation,* and thy gates Praise.
The sun shall be no more thy light by day;* neither for brightness
shall the moon give light unto thee:
but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light,* and thy God
thy glory.
Glory
be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the
beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
De Tribulatione mea (A Song of Jonah) Jonah 2:2-7,9
Ordinary:
Advent: When
my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord:* and my prayer came in unto
thee, into thine holy temple.
Xmas: I
cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me * out of the
belly of a virgin thou answered my plea.
Lent: Then I
said, I am cast out of thy sight * yet I will look again toward thy holy
temple.
Easter: But
I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving;* Salvation is of the
Lord. Alleluia!
I cried by reason of
mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me * out of the belly of hell cried
I, and thou heardest my voice.
For thou hadst cast
me into the deep, in the midst of the seas * and the floods compassed me about:
all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
Then I said, I am
cast out of thy sight * yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
The waters
compassed me about, even to the soul* the depth closed me round about, the
weeds were wrapped about my head.
I went down to the
bottoms of the mountains;* the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet
hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my God.
When my soul
fainted within me I remembered the Lord:* and my prayer came in unto thee, into
thine holy temple.
They that observe
lying vanities* forsake their own mercy.
But I will
sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving;* I will pay that that I
have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.

Kyrie Pantokrator
(A Song of Penitence) Prayer
of Manasseh, 1‑2, 4, 6‑7, 11‑15
1 O Lord, Almighty God of our
fathers: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and of their righteous seed;
2 who hast made heaven and
earth: with all the ornament thereof;
4 whom all men fear, and
tremble: before thy power;
5 for the majesty of thy glory
cannot be borne, and thine angry threatening toward sinners is importable:
6 but thy merciful promise: is
unmeasurable and unsearchable;
7 for thou art the most high
Lord, of great compassion: longsuffering, very merciful, and repentest of the
evils of men.
Thou,
O Lord, according to thy great goodness hast promised repentance and
forgiveness to them that have sinned against thee: and of thine infinite
mercies hast appointed repentance unto sinners, that they may be saved.
11 Now therefore I bow the knee
of mine heart: beseeching thee of grace.
12 I have sinned, O Lord, I have
sinned: and I acknowledge mine iniquities:
13 wherefore, I humbly beseech
thee, forgive me, O Lord, forgive me: and destroy me not with mine iniquities.
Be
not angry with me for ever, by reserving evil for me; neither condemn me to the
lower parts of the earth.
For
thou art the God: even the God of them that repent;
14 and in me thou wilt shew all
thy goodness: for thou wilt save me, that am unworthy, according to thy great
mercy.
15 Therefore I will praise thee
for ever all the days of my life: for all the powers of the heavens do praise
thee, and thine is the glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Glory
be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the
beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

his by right
Lent: You created everything that is and hate
nothing you have made * for your mercy endures for ever.
Easter: Splendor and honor and kingly power are

Splendor and
honor and kingly power * are yours by right, O Lord our God,
For you

their being;
And yours by

for with your blood you have redeemed for
God,
From every

a kingdom of priests to serve our God.
And so, to him

Advent: There is

God.
Xmas: The Virgin
hath born * him that shall inherit the throne of glory
Lent: Talk no
more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth:* for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.
Easter: My heart
rejoiceth in the Lord,* because I rejoice in thy salvation.
My heart rejoiceth in the Lord,* mine horn is exalted in the
Lord:
my mouth is enlarged over mine
enemies;* because I rejoice in thy salvation.
There is none holy as the Lord: for there is none beside
thee:* neither is there any rock like our God.
Talk no more so exceeding
proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth:* for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by
him actions are weighed.
The bows of the mighty men are
broken,* and they that stumbled are girded with strength.
They that were full have hired
out themselves for bread;* and they that were hungry ceased:
so that the barren hath born
seven;* and she that hath many children is waxed feeble.
The Lord killeth, and maketh alive:*
he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.
The Lord maketh poor, and maketh
rich:* he bringeth low, and lifteth up.
He raiseth up the poor out of
the dust,* and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill,
to set them among
princes,* and to make them inherit the
throne of glory:
for the pillars of the earth
are the Lord's,* and he hath set the world
upon them.
Glory
be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the

the Lord God of Israel ,
*
for he hath visited and redeemed his

And hath
raised up a mighty salvation for us *
in the house of his servant David,
As he spake
by the mouth of his holy prophets, *
which have been since the world began:
That we
should be saved from our enemies, *
and from the hand of all that hate us;
To perform
the mercy promised to our forefathers, *
and to remember his holy covenant;
To perform the oath which he sware to our forefather
Abraham,*
that he would give us,
That we
being delivered out of the hand of our enemies *
might serve him without fear,
In holiness
and righteousness before him, *
all the days of our life.
And thou,
child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest, *
for thou shalt go before the face of the
Lord
to prepare his ways;
To give
knowledge of salvation unto his people *
for the remission of their sins,
Through the
tender mercy of our God, *
whereby the dayspring from on high hath
visited us;
To give
light to them that sit in darkness
and in the
shadow of death, *
and to guide our feet into the way of
peace.
Glory to
the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will
be for ever. Amen.

The General Thanksgiving
Officiant and People
Almighty
God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble
and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving‑kindness to us and
to all men. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings
of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the
world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of
glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that
our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not
only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to thy service,
and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through
Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and
glory, world without end. Amen.
A Prayer of St. Chrysostom
Almighty
God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to
make our common supplication unto thee, and hast
promised through thy well‑beloved Son that when two or three
are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of
them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires
and petitions of thy
servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world
knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.
Then may be said
Let us
bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
From Easter Day through the Day of Pentecost “Alleluia, alleluia” may
be added
to the preceding versicle and response.
The Officiant may then conclude with the following
2
Cor 13:14
The grace
of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost,
be with us all evermore. Amen.
