Opening Sentence

The Service begins with one of the following sentences of scripture.

At the third hour they crucified him. Mark 15:25

And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: Acts 2:17

Opening Prayer

V: O God, make speed to save us.

R: O Lord, make haste to help us.

V: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost:

R: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen.

V. Legem pone.

TEACH me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes, * and I shall keep it unto the end.
34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; * yea, I shall keep it with my whole heart.
35 Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; * for therein is my desire.
36 Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, * and not to covetousness.
37 O turn away mine eyes, lest they behold vanity; * and quicken thou me in thy way.
38 O stablish thy word in thy servant, * that I may fear thee.
39 Take away the rebuke that I am afraid of; * for thy judgments are good.

VII. Memor esto verbi tui.

O THINK upon thy servant, as concerning thy word, * wherein thou hast caused me to put my trust.
50 The same is my comfort in my trouble; * for thy word hath quickened me.
51 The proud have had me exceedingly in derision; * yet have I not shrinked from thy law.
52 For I remembered thine everlasting judgments, O LORD, * and received comfort.
53 I am horribly afraid, * for the ungodly that forsake thy law.
54 Thy statutes have been my songs, * in the house of my pilgrimage.
55 I have thought upon thy Name, O LORD, in the night season, * and have kept thy law.
56 This I had, * because I kept thy commandments.

VIII. Portio mea, Domine.

THOU art my portion, O LORD; * I have promised to keep thy law.
58 I made my humble petition in thy presence with my whole heart; * O be merciful unto me, according to thy word.
59 I called mine own ways to remembrance, * and turned my feet unto thy testimonies.
60 I made haste, and prolonged not the time, * to keep thy commandments.
61 The snares of the ungodly have compassed me about; * but I have not forgotten thy law.
62 At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee, * because of thy righteous judgments.
63 I am a companion of all them that fear thee, * and keep thy commandments.
64 The earth, O LORD, is full of thy mercy: * O teach me thy statutes.

IX. Bonitatem fecisti.

O LORD, thou hast dealt graciously with thy servant, * according unto thy word.
66 O teach me true understanding and knowledge; * for I have believed thy commandments.
67 Before I was troubled, I went wrong; * but now have I kept thy word.
68 Thou art good and gracious; * O teach me thy statutes.
69 The proud have imagined a lie against me; * but I will keep thy commandments with my whole heart.
70 Their heart is as fat as brawn; * but my delight hath been in thy law.
71 It is good for me that I have been in trouble; * that I may learn thy statutes.
72 The law of thy mouth is dearer unto me * than thousands of gold and silver.

X. Manus tuae fecerunt me.

THY hands have made me and fashioned me: * O give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.
74 They that fear thee will be glad when they see me; * because I have put my trust in thy word.
75 I know, O LORD, that thy judgments are right, * and that thou of very faithfulness hast caused me to be troubled.
76 O let thy merciful kindness be my comfort, * according to thy word unto thy servant.
77 O let thy loving mercies come unto me, that I may live; * for thy law is my delight.
78 Let the proud be confounded, for they go wickedly about to destroy me; * but I will be occupied in thy commandments.
79 Let such as fear thee, and have known thy testimonies, * be turned unto me.
80 O let my heart be sound in thy statutes, * that I be not ashamed.

For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Thursday

Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.  Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the LORD our God shall call. And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. Acts 2:37-41

Saturday

And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. And all that believed were together, and had all things common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God, and having favour with all the people. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.  Amen.

The Officiant then says one or more of the following Collects.  If desired, the Collect of the Day may be used.

Blessed Savior, at this hour thou hung upon the cross, stretching out thy loving arms: Grant that all the peoples of the earth may look to thee and be saved;  for thy tender mercies’ sake.  Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, thou said to thine apostles, “Peace I give to you; my own peace I leave with you:” Regard not our sins, but the faith of thy Church, and give unto us the peace and unity of that heavenly City, where with the Father and the Holy Ghost you live and reign, now and for ever.  Amen.

We entreat Thee Christ our Lord, with steadfast prayers, That at the third hour of the day, when Thou didst send forth thy Holy Spirit upon Thine Apostles as they prayed. Thou wouldst Command us to be given Thy grave who ask it of Thee and partake in it Who livist and reignist with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit God through all the ages of ages. Amen
