Nine Lessons and
Carols for Advent
This service may be used at any time
from the First Sunday in advent until night fall on Christmas Eve
The Opening Hymn
Here shall be sung a processional hymn
as the choir and ministers enter. As with all the hymns in this service, it
should be an ADVENT hymn.
The Bidding Prayer
Beloved
in Christ, in this Advent, let it be our care and delight to hear again the
message of God, and in heart and mind to wait with the people of Israel and the
whole world for the coming of our Lord and Savior.
Let
us read and mark in Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes of God from
the first days of our disobedience unto the glorious Redemption brought us by
this holy Child; and let us make this place glad with our carols of
praise.
But
first, let us pray for the needs of his whole world; for peace and goodwill
over all the earth; for the mission and unity of the Church, for which he died,
and especially in this country and within this city.
And
because this of all things would rejoice his heart, let us at this time
remember in his name the poor and the helpless; the hungry and the oppressed;
the sick and those who mourn; the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the
little children; and all those who know not the Lord Jesus, or who love him
not, or who by sin have grieved his heart of love.
Lastly,
let us remember before God his pure and lowly Mother, and all those who rejoice
with us, but upon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude which no
one can number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom, in this
Lord Jesus, we for evermore are one.
These
prayers and praises let us humbly offer up to the throne of heaven, in the
words which Christ himself hath taught us:
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be
thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give
us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those
who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Carols
A Hymn
Here shall be sung a Hymn
The First Lesson Genesis
3:1-15
Now the serpent was
more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he
said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the
garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the
fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree
which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it,
neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said
unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know
that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be
as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that
the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to
be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and
gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. And the
eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they
sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. And they
heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day:
and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst
the trees of the garden. And the Lord God called unto Adam,
and said unto him, Where art thou?
And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden,
and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. And he
said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof
I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said,
The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did
eat. And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that
thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. And
the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art
cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly
shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And
I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her
seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

The Second Lesson Isaiah
40:1–11
Comfort ye, comfort
ye my people, saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to
Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her
iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the Lord's hand double for all
her sins. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness,
Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our
God. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill
shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places
plain: And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all
flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. The
voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the
goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: The grass
withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it:
surely the people is grass. The grass withereth, the flower
fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever. O Zion,
that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem,
that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not
afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God! Behold,
the Lord God will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him:
behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. He
shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm,
and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

The Third Lesson Jeremiah
23:5–6
Behold, the days
come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a
King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the
earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell
safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, The Lord Our
Righteousness.

The Fourth Lesson Zechariah
9:9–10
Rejoice greatly, O
daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto
thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon
a colt the foal of an ass. And I will cut off the chariot from
Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and
he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even
to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth.

The Fifth Lesson Isaiah
35:1–10
The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for
them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose. It
shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice even with joy and singing: the glory of
Lebanon shall be given unto it, the excellency of Carmel and Sharon, they shall
see the glory of the Lord, and the excellency of our God. Strengthen
ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. Say to them
that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come
with vengeance, even God with a recompence; he will come and save you. Then
the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be
unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the
tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and
streams in the desert. And the parched ground shall become a
pool, and the thirsty land springs of water: in the habitation of dragons,
where each lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes. And an
highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness;
the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring
men, though fools, shall not err therein. No lion shall be
there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon, it shall not be found there;
but the redeemed shall walk there: And the ransomed of the Lord
shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads:
they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

The Sixth Lesson Isaiah
11:1-9
And there shall come
forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And
the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and
understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of
the fear of the Lord; And shall make him of quick understanding
in the fear of the Lord: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes,
neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: But with
righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of
the earth: and he shall smite the earth: with the rod of his mouth, and with
the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. And
righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of
his reins. The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the
leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the
fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the
cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the
lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the sucking child shall
play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the
cockatrice' den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my
holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the
waters cover the sea.

The Seventh Lesson Micha
5:2-4
But thou, Bethlehem
Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee
shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth
have been from of old, from everlasting. Therefore will he give
them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth: then the
remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel. And
he shall stand and feed in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name
of the Lord his God; and they shall abide: for now shall he be great unto the
ends of the earth.

The Eighth Lessson Luke
1:5-25
There was in the
days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the
course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was
Elisabeth. And they were both righteous before God, walking in
all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. And
they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now
well stricken in years. And it came to pass, that while he
executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course, According
to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went
into the temple of the Lord. And the whole multitude of the
people were praying without at the time of incense. And there
appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar
of incense. And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and
fear fell upon him. But the angel said unto him, Fear not,
Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a
son, and thou shalt call his name John. And thou shalt have joy
and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. For he shall
be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong
drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb. And
many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. And
he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of
the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to
make ready a people prepared for the Lord. And Zacharias said
unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife
well stricken in years. And the angel answering said unto him,
I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto
thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. And, behold, thou
shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be
performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in
their season. And the people waited for Zacharias, and
marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple. And when he
came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a
vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless. And
it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were
accomplished, he departed to his own house. And after those
days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying, Thus
hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away
my reproach among men.

Antiphon for Advent:
And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: * for thou shalt
go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways
BLESSED be the Lord God of Israel; * for he hath visited and
redeemed his people;
And hath raised up a mighty salvation for us, * in the house of his servant David;
As he spake by the mouth of his holy Prophets, * which have been since the world began;
That we should be saved from our enemies, * and from the hand of all that hate us.
And hath raised up a mighty salvation for us, * in the house of his servant David;
As he spake by the mouth of his holy Prophets, * which have been since the world began;
That we should be saved from our enemies, * and from the hand of all that hate us.
To perform the mercy promised to our forefathers, * and to
remember his holy covenant;
To perform the oath which he sware to our forefather Abraham, * that he would give us;
That we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies * might serve him without fear;
In holiness and righteousness before him, * all the days of our life.
To perform the oath which he sware to our forefather Abraham, * that he would give us;
That we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies * might serve him without fear;
In holiness and righteousness before him, * all the days of our life.
And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest:
* for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
To give knowledge of salvation unto his people * for the remission of their sins,
Through the tender mercy of our God; * whereby the day-spring from on high hath visited us;
To give light to them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death, * and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
To give knowledge of salvation unto his people * for the remission of their sins,
Through the tender mercy of our God; * whereby the day-spring from on high hath visited us;
To give light to them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death, * and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
The Nineth Lesson Luke
1:26–35, 38
And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel
was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a
virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the
virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and
said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art
thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his
saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And
the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And,
behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call
his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son
of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father
David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and
of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the
angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the
angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the
power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing
which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And
Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy
word. And the angel departed from her.

Ghost
Or the Great O Antiphon
appointed for this day
MY soul doth magnify the Lord, * and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my
Saviour.
For he hath regarded * the lowliness of his handmaiden.
For behold, from henceforth * all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me; * and holy is his Name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him * throughout all generations.
He hath showed strength with his arm; * he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat, * and hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things; * and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel; * as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, for ever.

The Collect of the Season
ALMIGHTY God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of
darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal
life, in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in
the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both
the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal, through him who
liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, now and ever. Amen.
The Benediction
THIS
Advent as the whole cosmos lays waiting for the birth of its Redeemer, may the

Blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst
you, and remain with you always. Amen.
