The Introit Psalm
119 XVII. Mirabilia.
THY testimonies are wonderful;
* therefore doth my soul keep them.
130 When thy word goeth forth, * it giveth light and
understanding unto the simple.
131 I opened my mouth, and drew in my breath; * for my
delight was in thy commandments.
132 O look thou upon me, and be merciful unto me, * as thou
usest to do unto those that love thy Name.
133 Order my steps in thy word; * and so shall no wickedness
have dominion over me.
134 O deliver me from the wrongful dealings of men; * and so
shall I keep thy commandments.
135 Show the light of thy countenance upon thy servant, *
and teach me thy statutes.
136 Mine eyes gush out with water, * because men keep not
thy law.
The Collect.
LORD, we pray thee that thy grace may always prevent and follow us,
and make us continually to be given to all good works; through Jesus Christ our
Lord.Amen.
The Epistle. Ephes. iv. 1.
ITHEREFORE, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk
worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and
meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love endeavouring to
keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one
Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith,
one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and
in you all.
The Gradual Ps
131:1-3
LORD, I
am not high-minded: / I have no proud looks.
2 I do not exercise myself in great matters, / which are too high for me.
3 But I calm my soul and keep it quiet, like a child weaned with his mother: /
yea, my soul is even as a weaned child.
The Alleluia Ps 131:4
Alleluia! Alleluia! O Israel, trust in the Lord, / from this time
forth for evermore. Alleluia!
The Gospel. St. Luke xiv. 1.
IT came to pass, as Jesus went into the house of one of the chief
Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. And, behold,
there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. And Jesus answering
spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying Is it lawful to heal on the
sabbath day? And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and
let him go and answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox
fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?
And they could not answer him again to these things. And he put forth a parable
to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms;
saying unto them, When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in
the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him; and he
that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou
begin with shame to take the lowest room. But when thou art bidden, go and sit
down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto
thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of
them that sit at meat with thee. For whosoever exalteth himself shall be
abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

The Epistle Rom. v. 17-21
Brethren, if by one man’s offence death reigned by
one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of
righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) Therefore as by the
offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the
righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of
life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the
obedience of one shall many be made righteous. Moreover the law entered, that
the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through
righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
The Gospel Matt. xvii. 24-27
At that time, when Jesus and his disciples were come
to Capernaum,
they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master
pay tribute? He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus
prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the
earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers? Peter
saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.
Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an
hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his
mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me
and thee.
