124. Nisi quia
Dominus.
IF the LORD himself had not been on our
side, now may Israel say; * if the LORD himself had not been on our side, when men rose
up against us;
2 They had swallowed us up alive; * when
they were so wrathfully displeased at us.
3 Yea, the waters had drowned us, * and the stream had gone over our soul.
4 The deep waters of the proud * had gone even over our soul.
5 But praised be the LORD, * who hath not given us over for a prey unto their teeth.
6 Our soul is escaped even as a bird out of the snare of the fowler; * the snare is broken, and we are delivered.
7 Our help standeth in the Name of the LORD, * who hath made heaven and earth.

The Epistle Rom. v. 17-21
Brethren, if by one man’s offence
death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of
the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) Therefore
as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by
the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of
life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the
obedience of one shall many be made righteous. Moreover the law entered, that
the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through
righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
The GospelMatt. xvii. 24-27
At that time, when Jesus and his
disciples were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to
Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute? He saith, Yes. And when he
was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou,
Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own
children, or of strangers? Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto
him, Then are the children free. Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them,
go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh
up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that
take, and give unto them for me and thee.
