Seasonal Hymns: Holy Days 351-360

St. Patrick
351
I bind unto myself today – St Patrick / C Alexander trans
I bind unto myself today
the strong Name of the Trinity,
by invocation of the same,
the Three in One, and One in Three.
I bind this day to me for ever,
by power of faith, Christ's Incarnation;
his baptism in Jordan river;
his death on cross for my salvation;
his bursting from the spicèd tomb;
his riding up the heavenly way;
his coming at the day of doom:
I bind unto myself today.

I bind unto myself the power
of the great love of cherubim;
the sweet "Well done" in judgment hour;
the service of the seraphim;
confessors' faith, apostles' word,
the patriarchs' prayers, the prophets' scrolls;
all good deeds done unto the Lord,
and purity of virgin souls.

I bind unto myself today
the virtues of the starlit heaven
the glorious sun's life-giving ray,
the whiteness of the moon at even,
the flashing of the lightning free,
the whirling wind's tempestuous shocks,
the stable earth, the deep salt sea,
around the old eternal rocks.

I bind unto myself today
the power of God to hold and lead,
his eye to watch, his might to stay,
his ear to hearken, to my need;
the wisdom of my God to teach,
his hand to guide, his shield to ward;
the word of God to give me speech,
his heavenly host to be my guard.
Christ be with me,
Christ within me,
Christ behind me,
Christ before me,
Christ beside me,
Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort
and restore me.
Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ in quiet,
Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of
all that love me,
Christ in mouth of
friend and stranger.
I bind unto myself today
the strong Name of the Trinity,
by invocation of the same,
the Three in One, and One in Three.
Of whom all nature hath creation,
eternal Father, Spirit, Word:
praise to the Lord of my salvation,
salvation is of Christ the Lord.

By the Creator, Joseph was appointed – H Caseanate / Hymnal 1982

Sing of Mary, pure and lowly – R Palmer

Praise we the Lord this day – Hymns for the Festivals

Praise we the Lord this day,
this day so long foretold,
whose promise shone with cheering ray
on waiting saints of old.

The prophet gave the sign
for faithful men to read:
a virgin born of David's line
shall bear the promised seed.

Ask not how this should be,
but worship and adore,
like her whom heaven's Majesty
came down to shadow o'er.

Meekly she bowed her head
to hear the gracious word,
Mary, the pure and lowly maid,
the favored of the Lord.

Blessed shall be her name
in all the Church on earth,
through whom that wondrous mercy came,
the incarnate Savior's birth.

Jesus, the Virgin's Son,
we praise thee and adore,
who art with God the Father one
and Spirit evermore.

356
The angel Gabriel from heaven came – S Baring-Gould trans

Praise we the Lord this day,
this day so long foretold,
whose promise shone with cheering ray
on waiting saints of old.

The prophet gave the sign
for faithful men to read:
a virgin born of David's line
shall bear the promised seed.

Ask not how this should be,
but worship and adore,
like her whom heaven's Majesty
came down to shadow o'er.

Meekly she bowed her head
to hear the gracious word,
Mary, the pure and lowly maid,
the favored of the Lord.

Blessed shall be her name
in all the Church on earth,
through whom that wondrous mercy came,
the incarnate Savior's birth.

Jesus, the Virgin's Son,
we praise thee and adore,
who art with God the Father one
and Spirit evermore.

Nova, nova – C Daw

Gabriel's message does away – J Neale trans

Gabriel's message does away
Satan's curse and Satan's sway,
out of darkness brings our Day:

Refrain:
so, behold,
all the gates of heaven unfold.

He that comes despised shall reign;
he that cannot die, be slain;
death by death its death shall gain: Refrain

Weakness shall the strong confound;
by the hands, in grave clothes wound,
Adam's chains shall be unbound. Refrain

By the sword that was his own,
by that sword, and that alone,
shall Goliath be o'erthrown: Refrain

Art by art shall be assailed;
to the cross shall Life be nailed;
from the grave shall hope be hailed: Refrain

The Word whom earth and sea and sky – Fortunatus / J Neale trans

The Word whom earth and sea and sky
adore and laud and magnify,
whose might they show, whose praise they tell,
in Mary's body deigned to dwell.

How blessed that Mother, in whose shrine
the world's Creator, Lord divine,
whose hand contains the earth and sky,
once deigned, as in his ark, to lie.

Blest in the message Gabriel brought,
blest by the work the Spirit wrought;
more blest to bring to human birth
the long-desired of all the earth.

Lord Jesus, Virgin-born, to thee
eternal praise and glory be,
whom with the Father we adore
and Holy Spirit everrmore.

O blessed Mark, your book so brief - Brother Aelred Seton-Shanley

O blessed Mark, your book so brief
was first to give the Gospel form:
the catechesis peter preached
you penned in language unadorned.

So close in time and to the source,
your hand reveals those early years;
Christ's messianic secret is
proclaimed to anyone who hears.

Christ is the great Messiah-King,
yet Isra'l's hopes had been misplaced:
he came to serve, and serving, die
- but he, the "Son of Man", God raised.

Great Alexandra claimed you hers
as founding bishop for her faith:
tradition holds that your remains
and holy name, both, Venice, grace.

Your legacy, a precious link
with what occurred in Palestine:
the Lord you loved and served as scribe
still lives through you to our own time.

O Judah's Lion, Lord of Life,
to whom the four great creatures bow:
the one who claim's the lion's share
shall ever praise you, then, as now.
