General Hymns: The Holy Trinity

General Hymns
The Holy Trinity
489
Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty – R Heber
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty,
God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity.

Holy, holy, holy! All saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
though the sinful human eye thy glory may not see,
only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
perfect in power, in love, and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy Name, in earth, and sky, and sea;
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty,
God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity.

Ancient of Days, who sittest throned in glory – W Doane
Ancient of Days, who sittest throned in glory,
to thee all knees are bent, all voices pray;
thy love has blessed the wide world's wondrous story
with light and life since Eden's dawning day.

O holy Father, who hast led thy children
in all the ages with the fire and cloud,
through seas dry-shod, through weary wastes bewildering
to thee in reverent love are hearts are bowed.

O holy Jesus, Prince of Peace and Savior,
to thee we owe the peace that still prevails,
stilling the rude wills of men's wild behavior,
and calming passion's fierce and stormy gales.

O Holy Ghost, the Lord and the Life-giver,
thine is the quickening power that gives increase:
from thee have flowed, as from a pleasant river,
our plenty, wealth, prosperity, and peace.

O Triune God, with heart and voice adoring,
praise we the goodness that doth crown our days;
pray we that thou wilt hear us, still imploring
thy love and favor, kept to us always.

O God, we praise thee, and confess –New Version of the Psalms of David, 1698
O God, we praise thee, and confess
that thou the only Lord
and everlasting Father art,
by all the earth adored.

To thee all angels cry aloud;
to thee the powers on high,
both cherubim and seraphim,
continually do cry:

O holy, holy, holy Lord,
whom heavenly hosts obey,
the world is with the glory filled
of thy majestic sway!

The apostles' glorious company,
and prophets crowned with light,
with all the martyrs' noble host,
thy constant praise recite.

The holy Church throughout the world,
O Lord, confesses thee,
that thou eternal Father art,
of boundless majesty.

492
Come, thou almighty King – Hymns for Social Worship
Come, thou almighty King,
help us thy Name to sing,
help us to praise!
Father all glorious,
over all victorious,
come and reign over us,
Ancient of Days!

Come, thou incarnate Word,
gird on thy mighty sword,
our prayer attend!
Come, and thy people bless,
and give thy word success,
Spirit of holiness,
on us descend!

Come, holy Comforter,
thy sacred witness bear
in this glad hour.
thou who almighty art,
now rule in every heart,
and ne'er from us depart,
Spirit of power!

To Thee, great One in Three,
Eternal praises be,
hence evermore.
Thy sovereign majesty
may we in glory see,
and to eternity
love and adore!

493
Holy God, we praise thy name – I Franz
Holy God, we praise thy Name;
Lord of all, we bow before thee!
All on earth thy scepter claim,
all in heaven above adore thee;
infinite thy vast domain,
everlasting is thy reign.

Hark! the loud celestial hymn
angel choirs above are raising,
cherubim and seraphim,
in unceasing chorus praising;
fill the heavens with sweet accord:
Holy, holy, holy, Lord.

Lo! the apostolic train
join the sacred Name to hallow;
prophets swell the loud refrain,
and the white robed martyrs follow;
and from morn to set of sun,
through the Church the song goes on.

Holy Father, Holy Son,
Holy Spirit, Three we name thee;
while in essence only One,
undivided God we claim thee;
and adoring bend the knee,
while we own the mystery.

494
Round the Lord in glory seated – R Mant
Round the Lord in glory seated,
cherubim and seraphim
filled his temple, and repeated
each to each the alternate hymn:
"Lord, thy glory fills the heaven,
earth is with its fulness stored;
unto thee be glory given,
holy, holy, holy Lord!"

Heav'n is still with glory ringing,
earth takes up the angels' cry,
"Holy, holy, holy," singing,
"Lord of Hosts, the Lord most high."
With his seraph train before Him,
with his holy church below,
thus conspire we to adore him,
bid we thus our anthem flow.

"Lord, thy glory fills the heaven,
earth is with its fulness stored;
unto thee be glory given,
holy, holy, holy Lord!"
Thus thy glorious Name confessing,
we adopt thine angels' cry,
"Holy, holy, holy," blessing
thee, the Lord of Hosts most high.

495
Holy Father, great Creator – A Griswold
Holy Father, great Creator,
source of mercy, love, and peace,
look upon the Mediator,
clothe us with his righteousness;
heavenly Father, heavenly Father,
through the Savior hear and bless.

Holy Jesus, Lord of glory,
whom angelic hosts proclaim,
while we hear thy wondrous story,
meet and worship in thy Name,
dear Redeemer, dear Redeemer,
in our hearts thy peace proclaim.

Holy Spirit, Sanctifier,
come with unction from above,
raise our hearts to raptures higher,
fill them with the Savior's love.
Source of comfort, Source of comfort,
cheer us with the Savior's love.

God the Lord, through every nation
let thy wondrous mercies shine.
In the song of thy salvation
every tongue and race combine.
Great Jehovah, Great Jehovah,
form our hearts and make them thine.

496
How wondrous great, how glorious bright – I Watts
How wondrous great, how glorious bright,
must our Creator be,
who dwells amidst the dazzling light
of vast infinity!

Our soaring spirits upwards rise
toward the celestial throne;
fain would we see the blessed Three,
and the Almighty One.

Our reason stretches all its wings,
and climbs above the skies;
but still how far beneath thy feet
our lowly reason lies!

While angels strain their nobler powers,
and sweep the immortal string,
in humble notes our faith adores
the great mysterious King.

497
Thou, whose almighty word – J Marriott
Thou, whose almighty word
chaos and darkness heard,
and took their flight;
hear us, we humbly pray,
and, where the Gospel day
sheds not its glorious ray,
let there be light!

Thou who didst come to bring
on thy redeeming wing
healing and sight,
heal to the sick in mind,
sight to the in-ly blind,
now to all humankind,
let there be light!

Spirit of truth and love,
life-giving holy Dove,
speed forth thy flight!
Move on the waters' face
bearing the gifts of grace,
and, in earth's darkest place,
let there be light!

Holy and blessèd Three,
glorious Trinity,
Wisdom, Love, Might;
boundless as ocean's tide,
rolling in fullest pride,
through the world far and wide,
let there be light!

498
Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts – C  Wordsworth
Holy, holy, holy, Lord
God of Hosts, eternal King,
by the heavens and earth adored!
Angels and archangels sing,
chanting everlastingly
to the blessèŠd Trinity.

Since by thee were all things made,
and in thee do all things live,
be to thee all honor paid,
praise to thee let all things give,
singing everlastingly
to the blessèŠd Trinity.

Thousands, tens of thousands, stand,
spirits blest, before thy throne,
speeding thence at thy command,
and, when thy behests are done,
singing everlastingly
to the blessèŠd Trinity.

Cherubim and seraphim
veil their faces with their wings;
eyes of angels are too dim
to behold the King of kings,
while they sing eternally
to the blessèŠd Trinity.

Thee apostles, prophets thee,
thee the noble martyr band,
praise with solemn jubilee;
thee, the church in every land;
singing everlastingly
to the blessèŠd Trinity.

Alleluia! Lord, to thee
Father, Son and Holy Ghost,
Three in One and One in Three,
join we with the heavenly host,
singing everlastingly
to the blessèŠd Trinity.

499
Holy Father, cheer our way – R Robinson

Holy Father, cheer our way
with thy love's perpetual ray;
grant us every closing day
light at evening time.

Holy Savior, calm our fears
when earth's brightness disappears;
grant us in our later years
light at evening time.

Holy Spirit, be thou nigh
when in mortal pains we lie;
grant us, as we come to die,
light at evening time.

Holy, blessèd Trinity,
darkness is not dark to thee;
those thou keepest always see
light at evening time.
