Devotions for Individuals and Families

Devotions for Individuals and Families
In the Morning

From Psalm 51
Thou shalt open my lips, O Lord, * and my mouth shall show thy praise.
Make me a clean heart, O God, * and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from thy presence, * and take not thy holy Spirit from me.
O give me the comfort of thy help again, * and stablish me with thy free Spirit.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
    as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

In the Early Evening

This devotion my be used before or after the evening meal.

Phos Hilaron
O Glading Light of the Holy Glory of the Immortal Father, Heavenly, Holy, Blessed Jesus Christ! Now that we have come to the setting of the sun and behold the vesper light, we sing thy praises God Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Meet it is for Thee at all times to be hymned with undefiled voices, O Son of God, Giver of life. Therefore the whole creation doth glorify Thee!

A Reading
It is not ourselves that we proclaim; we proclaim Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your servants, for Jesus' sake. For the same God who said, "Out of darkness let light shine," has caused his light to shine within us, to give the light of revelation--the revelation of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:5-6

Prayers may be offered for ourselves and others.

The Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
    hallowed be they Name,
    thy kingdom come,
    thy will be done,
    on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.

    as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
    but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
    for ever and ever. Amen.

The Collect
Lord Jesus, stay with us, for evening is at hand and the day is past; be our companion in the way, kindle our hearts, and awaken hope, that we may know you as you are revealed in Scripture and the breaking of bread. Grant this for the sake of your love. Amen.
At the Close of Day

Psalm 134
BEHOLD now, praise the LORD, * all ye servants of the LORD;
Ye that by night stand in the house of the LORD, * even in the courts of the house of our God.
Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, * and praise the LORD.
The LORD that made heaven and earth * give thee blessing out of Sion.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost,
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be world without end, Amen.

For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior, *
    whom you have prepared for all the world to see;

Prayer in Space

Prayer in Space
¶ The Morning and Evening Service to be used daily in space, shall be the same which is appointed in the Book of Common Prayer.

At Matins

The following Antiphon maybe used with the Venite

 (Alleluia!) THE heavens declare the glory of the Lord * O come, let us adore him (Alleluia!)

The following Canticle may be used after the old testament reading in place of the Te Deum except on Sundays and other Feasts and during Lent

 LORD our Governor, how excellent is thy Name in all the world; * thou that hast set thy glory above the heavens!
Out of the mouth of very babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength, because of thine enemies, * that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.
When I consider thy heavens, even the work of thy fingers; * the moon and the stars which thou hast ordained;
What is man, that thou art mindful of him? * and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
Thou madest him lower than the angels, * to crown him with glory and worship.
Thou makest him to have dominion of the works of thy hands; * and thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet:

A Collect

O Almighty God, who’s power dost hold the planets in their courses and every particle in existence, we ask for the blessing and protection to cross the vastness of thy creation that we may make many worlds fit places for our habitation and to spread thy gospel to those creatures made in thine image that know it not, all this we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord who with thee and Holy Ghost live and reign unto the ages of ages, Amen.

At Evensong

This hymn maybe sung as the opening hymn after the versicles

Eternal ruler of the all who’s power extends to great and small
Who guides the stars with steadfast law who’s least creation fills with awe
O Grant thy mercy and thy grace to those who venture into space

The following Canticle may be used after the old testament reading in place of the Magnificat except on Saturdays & Sundays and other Feasts and during Advent and Lent

O PRAISE the LORD from the heavens: * praise him in the heights.
2 Praise him, all ye angels of his: * praise him, all his host.
3 Praise him, sun and moon: * praise him, all ye stars and light.
4 Praise him, all ye heavens, * and ye waters that are above the heavens.
5 Let them praise the Name of the LORD: * for he spake
the word, and they were made; he commanded, and they were created.
6 He hath made them fast for ever and ever: * he hath given them a law which shall not be broken.

Additional Prayers

¶ This prayer is especially appropriate for use in ships of war.

O ETERNAL Lord God, who alone spreadest out the heavens, and rulest the whole of creation; who hast set the laws of nature to govern every particle, until the universe comes to an end; Be pleased to receive into thy Almighty and most gracious protection, the persons of us thy servants, and the Fleet [or Ship] in which we serve. Preserve us from the dangers of the space, and from the violence of the enemy; that we may be a safeguard unto the United States of America, and a security for such as pass through space upon their lawful occasions; that the inhabitants of our worlds may in peace and quietness serve thee our God; and that we may return in safety to enjoy the blessings of the green hills of earth, with the fruits of our labour; and, with a thankful remembrance of thy mercies, to praise and glorify thy holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

At the Burial of the Dead in Space.

¶ The Office in the Common Prayer Book may be used; only instead of these words, [We therefore commit his body to the ground, earth to earth, &c.] say,

WE therefore commit the body or our brother/sister to the deapths, to be returned to the source from which its elements came, looking for the resurrection of the body, when space shall give up her dead, and the life of the world to come, through our Lord Jesus Christ; who at his coming shall change our vile body, that it may be like his glorious body, according to the mighty working whereby he is able to subdue all things unto himself.

A Eucharistic Prayer for Use in Space
This Eucharistic Prayer may be used in Space and at Earth bound space facilities at the discretion of the celebrant.

After the Comfortable words, the Celebrant faces the people and sings or says

                     The Lorde be with you.
 Answer.       And with thy spirite.
Priest:            Lift up your hearts.
Answer:         We lift them up unto the Lord.
Priest:            Let us give thanks unto our Lord God.
Answer:         It is meet and right so to do.

Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds

O’ God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, thou art worthy of glory and praise.
Glory to thee for ever and ever.

At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home.
By thy will they were created and have their being.

From the primal elements thou brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. Thou made us rulers of creation. But we turned against thee, and betrayed thy trust; and we turned against one another.
Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in thy sight

Again and again, thou called us to return. Through prophets and sages thou revealed thy righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent thy only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill thy Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace.
By his blood, he reconciled us.
By his wounds, we are healed.

And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:

Celebrant and People

 HOLY, HOLY, HOLY, Lord God of, hosts,
Heaven and earth are full of thy glory:
Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High.
Blessed is he that commeth in the name of the Lord:
Glory to thee, O lord in the highest.

The Celebrant continues

And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by thy Son, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by thy Holy Ghost to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the
forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to thee this sacrifice of thanksgiving,
We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming.

Lord God of our Fathers; God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see thy hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the
world in his name.
Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.

Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation. AMEN.

Two or more of the following psalms are sung or said.

Psalm 4. Cum invocarem.

HEAR me when I call, O God of my righteousness: * thou hast set me at liberty when I was in trouble; have mercy upon me, and hearken unto my prayer.
2 O ye sons of men, how long will ye blaspheme mine honour, * and have such pleasure in vanity, and seek after falsehood?
3 Know this also, that the LORD hath chosen to himself the man that is godly; * when I call upon the LORD he will hear me.
4 Stand in awe, and sin not; * commune with your own heart, and in your chamber, and be still.
5 Offer the sacrifice of righteousness, * and put your trust in the LORD.
6 There be many that say, * Who will show us any good?
7 LORD, lift thou up* the light of thy countenance upon us.
8 Thou hast put gladness in my heart; * yea, more than when their corn and wine and oil increase.
9 I will lay me down in peace, and take my rest; * for it is thou, LORD, only, that makest me dwell in safety.

 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,* and to the Holy Ghost:
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,* world without end. Amen.

Psalm 134. Ecce nunc.

BEHOLD now, praise the LORD, * all ye servants of the LORD;
2 Ye that by night stand in the house of the LORD, * even in the courts of the house of our God.
3 Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, * and praise the LORD.
4 The LORD that made heaven and earth * give thee blessing out of Sion.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,* and to the Holy Ghost:
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,* world without end. Amen.

The Lesson

Wisdom is better than strength, and a wise man is better than a strong man. Hear therefore, ye kings, and understand: learn, ye that are judges of the ends of the earth. Give ear, you that rule the people, and that please yourselves in multitudes of nations: For power is given you by the Lord, and strength by the most High, who will examine your works, and search out your thoughts: Because being ministers of his kingdom, you have not judged rightly, nor kept the law of justice, nor walked according to the will of God. Horribly and speedily will he appear to you: for a most severe judgment shall be for them that bear rule. For to him that is little, mercy is granted: but the mighty shall be mightily tormented. For God will not except any man's person, neither will he stand in awe of any man's greatness: for he made the little and the great, and he hath equally care of all. But a greater punishment is ready for the more mighty. 10 To you, therefore, O kings, are these my words, that you may learn wisdom, and not fall from it. 11 For they that have kept just things justly, shall be justified: and they that have learned these things, shall find what to answer. 12 Covet ye therefore my words, and love them, and you shall have instruction. 13 Wisdom is glorious, and never fadeth away, and is easily seen by them that love her, and is found by them that seek her. 14 She preventeth them that covet her, so that she first sheweth herself unto them. 15 He that awaketh early to seek her, shall not labour: for he shall find her sitting at his door. 16 To think therefore upon her, is perfect understanding: and he that watcheth for her, shall quickly be secure. 17 For she goeth about seeking such as are worthy of her, and she sheweth herself to them cheerfully in the ways, and meeteth them with all providence. 18 For the beginning of her is the most true desire of discipline. 19 And the care of discipline is love: and love is the keeping of her laws: and the keeping of her laws is the firm foundation of incorruption: 20 And incorruption bringeth near to God. 21 Therefore the desire of wisdom bringeth to the everlasting kingdom. 22 If then your delight be in thrones, and sceptres, O ye kings of the people, love wisdom, that you may reign for ever. 23 Love the light of wisdom, all ye that bear rule over peoples. 24 Now what wisdom is, and what was her origin, I will declare: and I will not hide from you the mysteries of God, but will seek her out from the beginning of her birth, and bring the knowledge of her to light, and will not pass over the truth: 25 Neither will I go with consuming envy: for such a man shall not be partaker of wisdom. 26 Now the multitude of the wise is the welfare of the whole world: and a wise king is the upholding of the people. 27 Receive therefore instruction by my words, and it shall be profitable to you. Wisdom 6

Hymn 100 All praise to thee, my God, this night – T Ken
All praise to thee, my God, this night,
for all the blessings of the light:
keep me, O keep me, King of kings,
beneath thine own almighty wings.

Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son,
the ill that I this day have done;
that with the world, myself, and thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

O may my soul on thee repose,
and with sweet sleep mine eyelids close;
sleep that shall me more vigorous make
to serve my God when I awake.

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
praise him, all creatures here below;
praise him above, ye heavenly host:
praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

The Psalms

Psalm 140. Eripe me, Domine.
Antiphon: Holy is the true Light, and passing wonderful, lending radiance to them that endured in the heat of the conflict: * from Christ they shall inherit a home of fadeless splendor, wherein they rejoice with gladness unceasing.
DELIVER me, O LORD, from the evil man; * and preserve me from the wicked man;
2 Who imagine mischief in their hearts, * and stir up strife all the day long.
3 They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; * adder's poison is under their lips.
4 Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the ungodly; * preserve me from the wicked men, who are purposed to overthrow my goings.
5 The proud have laid a snare for me, and spread a net abroad with cords; * yea, and set traps in my way.
6 I said unto the LORD, Thou art my God, * hear the voice of my prayers, O LORD.
7 O LORD God, thou strength of my health; * thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.
8 Let not the ungodly have his desire, O LORD; * let not his mischievous imagination prosper, lest they be too proud.
9 Let the mischief of their own lips fall upon the head of them * that compass me about.
10 Let hot burning coals fall upon them; * let them be cast into the fire, and into the pit, that they never rise up again.
11 A man full of words shall not prosper upon the earth: * evil shall hunt the wicked person to overthrow him.
12 Sure I am that the LORD will avenge the poor, * and maintain the cause of the helpless.
13 The righteous also shall give thanks unto thy Name; * and the just shall continue in thy sight.

GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Psalm 141. Domine, clamavi.
Antiphon: I beheld a great multitude which no man could number, * of all nations, standing before the throne.

LORD, I call upon thee; haste thee unto me, * and consider my voice, when I cry unto thee.
2 Let my prayer be set forth in thy sight as the incense; * and let the lifting up of my hands be an evening sacrifice.
3 Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth, * and keep the door of my lips.
4 O let not mine heart be inclined to any evil thing; * let me not be occupied in ungodly works with the men that work wickedness, neither let me eat of such things as please them.
5 Let the righteous rather smite me friendly, and reprove me; * yea, let not my head refuse their precious balms.
6 As for the ungodly, * I will pray yet against their wickedness.
7 Let theirjudges be overthrown in stony places, * that they may hear my words; for they are sweet.
8 Our bones lie scattered before the pit, * like as when one breaketh and heweth wood upon the earth.
9 But mine eyes look unto thee, O LORD God; * in thee is my trust; O cast not out my soul.
10 Keep me from the snare that they have laid for me, * and from the traps of the wicked doers.
11 Let the ungodly fall into their own nets together, * and let me ever escape them.

GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Lessons and Canticles

The First Lesson
Exo 33:7-19

And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought the Lord went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp. And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the tabernacle. And it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the Lord talked with Moses. 10 And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door. 11 And the Lord spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle. 12 And Moses said unto the Lord, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight. 13 Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people. 14 And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest. 15 And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence. 16 For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth. 17 And the Lord said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name. 18 And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory. 19 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.

Magnificat. St. Luke i. 46.

Antinphon – Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s: * and unto God the things that are God’s, Alleluia!

MY soul doth magnify the Lord, * and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
For he hath regarded * the lowliness of his handmaiden.
For behold, from henceforth * all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me; * and holy is his Name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him * throughout all generations.
He hath showed strength with his arm; * he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat, * and hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things; * and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel; * as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, for ever.
GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

The Second Lesson
Heb. 1:1-12

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high: Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him. And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. 10 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: 11 They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; 12 And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.

Nunc dimittis. St. Luke ii. 29.

Antiphon –  Lord mine eyes have seen * thy salvation
LORD, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, * according to thy word.
For mine eyes have seen * thy salvation,
Which thou hast prepared * before the face of all people;
To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, * and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

The Creed
¶ Then shall be said the Apostles’ Creed by the Minister and the People, standing. And any Churches may, instead of the words, He descended into hell, use the words, He went into the place of departed spirits, which are considered as words of the same meaning in the Creed.

I BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints: The Forgiveness of sins: The Resurrection of the body: And the Life everlasting. Amen.

To thee before the close of day,
Creator of the world, we pray
That, with thy wonted favor, thou
Wouldst be our guard and keeper now.

From all ill dreams defend our sight,
From fears and terrors of the night;

That spot of sin we may not know.

O Father, that we ask be done,
Through Jesus Christ, thine only Son,
Who, with the Holy Ghost and thee,
Doth live and reign eternally. Amen.
